Part Two: Is AI the Latest Version of Makeup? (See the Receipts)

In my recent article, “Is AI the Latest Version of Makeup?,” I explored the blurry line between using AI to polish your work and allowing it to replace your thinking. I also disclosed that AI helped me write the piece. But what does “AI helped” actually mean?

I decided to show my receipts. Yep, all 21 pages of them. You can read the full ChatGPT conversation that ultimately resulted in my roughly 1,600-word article, including the questions, challenges, rewrites and very human decisions that shaped the final draft.

And PSA: AI wasn’t the last stop. After I submitted the piece, ICMI editor Jessica Levco brought another essential layer to the process. Take a look at Jessica’s edits to my submitted draft to see what a skilled human editor contributed. Even AI-assisted writing still benefits from a thoughtful human touch. :)

P.S. If you want to join a few dozen of your peers (and me) for a conversation about ethical AI use at work, come hang out at our September 18 HDI & ICMI Idea Exchange. We'll swap real world hacks and talk about how we're all actually using AI.
