Open Bidding Could Save Medicare Jobs; New Hires in Chattanooga, St. Joseph

The Department of Health and Human Service in Chesterfield, Va. has announced that it will seek open bidding on a new contract for its General Dynamics Information Technology facility – a decision that could save thousands of call center jobs. The agency originally sought to limit bidding on the new contract for the facility, which has housed the 1-800-MEDICARE center in Chesterfield since 2003. The call center provides information to beneficiaries and caregivers regarding their benefits.

The NCO Group is adding 300 jobs to its call center in St. Joseph, Mo. The operation expansion will accommodate the company’s new business from two corporate clients. NCO is a global outsourcing firm based in Pennsylvania.

HomeServe recently hosted a job fair at its Chattanooga, Tenn. location. The company, which provides emergency home repair services, plans to hire 30 more employees – including customer service and sales personnel, property and casualty agents – in its Chattanooga center by March. That number is expected to reach a total of 100 within a year to 18 months.

Electronics retailer Conn's is asking 50 of its customer service representatives currently employed at its corporate office in Beaumont, Texas to relocate to San Antonio as a result of the company's need to consolidate locations. Reps who decide to relocate will be offered compensation for their moving expenses. Conn's will also try help those who can't or decide not to move find a position in another capacity within the corporate office or at one of its stores. Only customer services reps that answer incoming calls from customers with questions and credit payments will be affected. Conn's was forced to close 11 stores in 2011 without any layoffs.
