Education Vs. Experience for Internal Promotions

People Management, People Development, Hiring

As one of the persons in charge of all recruitment and selection processes in our company, a recent question has cropped up: How important is education vs. job experience when giving agents the opportunity to be considered for internal promotions for QA, Trainer, and Supervisor positions? I appreciate all your opinions on this burning question!

Unfortunately both are important my friend. The goal is to have a well rounded qualified leader in the role you are looking to fill. If you don't have a candidate that has both traits then hold off on filling the position if you can. Experience with your company and SOP's can outweigh the education part if you trust and like the candidate reporting to you. If you must pick one over the other then I would take experience with your company. However, if they have a ton of experience, but not with your company ,then I lean on education to get some fresh ideas into an ever changing industry.

I'd have to say it depends on the individual. When you look at each of those areas of the business, they are critical to its overall success. Understanding the QA process from both sides is critical. Education, when it comes to training, should be combined with experience. When it comes to the supervisory position, experience trumps education, but be sure the agent has the kind of leadership qualities and training to supervise others.
