You Can Be Friends with Anyone

Is there a co-worker you aren’t crazy about? Maybe a customer you dislike dealing with? Maybe you don’t particularly enjoy being around your spouse anymore? That’s how this conversation started with a friend over the weekend – we were discussing the number of people who complain about their significant other, forgetting (or ignoring) what he or she liked about their partner in the first place. My friend said: That’s crazy.

That’s up to you, not the other person. You can be friends with anyone.

Look for the good. Look for the things you have in common. Most importantly, go out of your way to do things for the person you don’t want to be friends with. You’ll make a friend. P.S. You need to read How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. The book is 77 years old and not one thing in it has changed about creating relationships. You can even apply much of Carnegie’s advice to things that weren’t around then, like social media. How to Win Friends & Influence People should be required reading for every single person in the world. I still pick it up and read it every few years. It is that good.
